Understanding your dental insurance

Taking care of your dental health is crucial for your overall well-being, and dental insurance is the primary means through which most individuals access dental care. However, dental insurance can often be perplexing, leading to patients avoiding dental visits.

At Arden Family Dentistry, we understand the various obstacles that prevent people from receiving quality dental care. We strive to eliminate these barriers by offering flexible appointment hours and accepting dental insurance from all major providers, including Delta Dental, United Healthcare, and Liberty Dental. Moreover, we aim to simplify the insurance process for you. Our team is more than happy to address any inquiries you may have regarding your insurance coverage, and we work diligently to optimize your dental insurance plan, ensuring that you pay the least amount possible for your dental treatments.

How does dental insurance work?

Dental insurance can be confusing, but it can also greatly help patients make dental care more affordable. Typically, people get insurance through their employer, who may contribute to the cost, making it even more affordable.

Basically, patients with dental insurance pay a monthly fee to their insurance provider to stay enrolled. In return, they get free or discounted dental services, depending on their specific insurance plan. Most plans cover preventive care completely, including two teeth cleanings a year, exams, and x-rays. Basic care and major procedures are covered at different percentages, with patients paying more for major procedures.

In-Network versus Out-of-Network: Understanding the Difference

Patients often find it difficult to determine if a dental practice is in-network or out-of-network with their dental insurance provider, and the implications of each. Although the term "out-of-network" may suggest that the practice does not accept your insurance, this is not always true and varies based on your specific insurance plan.

HMO Plans

If you have an HMO plan, it is important to note that only dental work performed by in-network dentists is covered. Additionally, any referrals to specialists must be obtained from the dentist within the network. Therefore, if you have an HMO plan, make sure to find a dentist who is part of their network.

PPO Plans

PPO plans offer greater flexibility and the difference between in-network and out-of-network coverage is less restrictive. When a dental practice is in-network with a PPO insurance provider, it simply means they have an agreement to charge the patient a smaller portion of the total treatment cost. Nevertheless, even out-of-network expenses are often reasonably priced.
